Travel Vaccines for India

Planning a trip to India from Vancouver? Whether you are travelling to Delhi, Mumbai, Punjab, Gujarat, Kerala, Goa, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Rajasthan, or visiting family and friends, it is important to review your travel health needs before departure.

India is one of the most common destinations for travellers from British Columbia, especially for family visits, weddings, business trips, tourism, and longer stays. Health recommendations can vary depending on where you are going, how long you are staying, your vaccination history, planned activities, and personal medical background.

At Ocean Travel Clinic in Vancouver, we provide personalized travel health consultations and destination-specific recommendations to help travellers prepare for their trip to India.

Do You Need Vaccines for India?

India does not usually require travellers arriving directly from Canada to show proof of routine travel vaccines for entry.

However, entry requirements are different from travel health recommendations.

Depending on your itinerary, age, medical history, and vaccination status, several vaccines may be discussed during your travel consultation. Travellers visiting friends and relatives, staying for longer periods, eating in local settings, or travelling outside major urban centres may have different risks than short-term hotel or business travellers.

Recommended Travel Vaccines for India

Hepatitis A is commonly discussed for travellers to India because it can spread through contaminated food and water.

Travellers may be exposed through food, beverages, ice, or close contact with an infected person. Hepatitis A vaccination is often reviewed during travel consultations for India.

Typhoid fever is an important consideration for travel to India.

It can spread through contaminated food and water. Typhoid vaccination may be considered for travellers who are visiting family, staying in local homes, travelling for longer periods, eating outside major hotels, or visiting smaller communities.

Hepatitis B spreads through blood and body fluids.

Protection may be discussed for travellers who may require medical or dental care abroad, stay for extended periods, have occupational exposure, or have other personal risk factors.

Travellers should make sure routine vaccines are up to date before international travel.

This may include:

  • Tetanus

  • Diphtheria

  • Pertussis

  • Measles

  • Mumps

  • Rubella

  • Influenza

  • COVID-19 vaccination when appropriate

Routine immunization review is especially important before travel to destinations where outbreaks may occur.

Rabies is a serious disease and is present in India.

Rabies vaccination may be considered for travellers who may have increased contact with animals, stay for longer periods, visit rural areas, participate in outdoor activities, or travel with children.

Travellers should avoid touching stray dogs, cats, monkeys, bats, or other animals. Any bite, scratch, or saliva exposure should be assessed urgently by a medical professional.

Yellow Fever vaccine is generally not required for travellers arriving directly from Canada to India.

However, India may require proof of Yellow Fever vaccination if a traveller is arriving from, or has transited through, a country where Yellow Fever transmission occurs.

Multi-country itineraries should always be reviewed before departure.

Japanese Encephalitis may be considered for some travellers to India, especially those spending extended time in rural or agricultural areas, travelling during certain seasons, or staying in areas where mosquito exposure may be higher.

It is not required for every traveller, but it should be reviewed during a travel health consultation if your itinerary includes rural stays, outdoor exposure, or longer travel.

Malaria Prevention for India

Malaria risk in India varies by region, season, itinerary, and type of travel.

Some travellers may need mosquito precautions only, while others may need to discuss malaria prevention medication. A travel health consultation can help review your exact destinations and determine whether malaria prevention is appropriate.

Mosquito bite prevention is important because mosquitoes can also transmit illnesses such as dengue, chikungunya, and Japanese Encephalitis.

Travellers may benefit from:

  • Using insect repellent

  • Wearing long sleeves and long pants when appropriate

  • Staying in screened or air-conditioned accommodations

  • Using mosquito nets when needed

  • Avoiding mosquito-heavy areas when possible

Food and Water Safety in India

Food and water precautions are very important when travelling to India.

Traveller’s diarrhea is one of the most common travel-related illnesses. Vaccines can reduce risk for some infections, but they do not protect against every food or water-related illness.

Travellers should consider:

  • Practicing frequent hand hygiene

  • Choosing food that is freshly prepared and served hot

  • Being cautious with ice and untreated water

  • Avoiding raw or undercooked foods when risk is uncertain

  • Using safe drinking water when appropriate

A travel consultation can include personalized advice about food and water safety and what to do if illness occurs while abroad.

Why Visit a Travel Clinic Before Travelling to India?

Every trip to India is different.

A traveller attending a family wedding in Punjab may have different health considerations than someone travelling to Goa, Rajasthan, Kerala, Mumbai, or Delhi for a short holiday or business trip.

A travel consultation allows recommendations to be based on your actual itinerary rather than general advice alone.

This is especially important for travellers who are:

  • Visiting friends and relatives

  • Travelling with children

  • Staying for several weeks or months

  • Visiting rural areas

  • Attending large gatherings or weddings

  • Travelling during monsoon season

  • Planning outdoor or adventure activities

  • Managing chronic medical conditions
