Meningitis is a severe infection that affects the brain and spinal cord. While rare, it spreads quickly in crowded settings, making vaccination essential for travellers to high-risk regions like sub-Saharan Africa and Hajj pilgrims.

Why Do Travelers Need the Meningitis Vaccine?

Meningitis outbreaks occur in certain regions, particularly the “meningitis belt” in sub-Saharan Africa. Saudi Arabia also requires proof of vaccination for travellers attending Hajj and Umrah pilgrimages. Those living in dormitories or with weakened immune systems are also at increased risk.

Types of Meningitis Vaccines Available in Canada

Several meningitis vaccines protect against different bacterial strains:

  • Men-C-C – Protects against serogroup C, commonly given to children in Canada.

  • Men-C-ACYW covers four strains: A, C, Y, and W-135; it is required for Hajj and is recommended for travellers to high-risk areas.

  • MenB protects against serogroup B, which is more common in North America.

Who Should Get the Vaccine?

You should consider vaccination if you:

  • Are travelling to sub-Saharan Africa.

  • Are you attending Hajj or Umrah (Men-C-ACYW is required)?

  • Are a student living in dormitories.

  • Have a weakened immune system or specific medical conditions.

When and Where to Get Vaccinated

The meningitis vaccine should be administered at least two weeks before travel. Hajj and Umrah travelers must receive it at least 10 days before arrival. In BC and Canada, vaccines are available at travel clinics, some pharmacies, and public health units. Public health programs may not cover some vaccines, requiring out-of-pocket payment.

Possible Side Effects

Most people tolerate the vaccine well. Common side effects include:

  • Soreness at the injection site

  • Mild fever or headache

  • Fatigue

Serious side effects are rare but should be reported to a healthcare provider.
